Back Pain: Gluteus Medius Muscle

Its primary action is as the hip abductor and stabilizer of the pelvis. When the gluteus medius is weak, you may overcompensate by using the muscles in your back to stabilize your body. This can add stress, pressure and tension to the low back. (fig. 1)

The left gluteus medius supports the right side of the pelvis during walking. Compensating for weakness can like the Trendelenburg Gait. (fig. 2) Your trunk side-bending with each step becoming source of low back discomfort.

By activating and strengthening your gluteus medius, you can take a part of the load off your back and create a more balanced pelvis. Try a side lying hip abduction exercise by keeping your shoulders in line with your hips and elongating your top leg prior to raising it above shoulder height. (fig. 3)
