Back Pain: Psoas Muscle

Its primary action is hip flexion and internal rotation. Full hip flexion and internal rotation are necessary for walking, running and that fantastic golf swing.  (fig. 1)

Posturally a short, tight psoas anteriorly rotates the pelvis, compressing the lumbar spine and hip socket. A compressed hip joint means the motion needed for walking (or a golf swing) has to come from somewhere else, which can be a source of back pain. (fig. 2)

Here is an easy Psoas/hip flexor stretch. Make sure your gluts are engaged! Hip flexors can become tight and short from prolonged sitting or functionally they can can shorten in an effort to stabilize the spine during activity, likely compensating for weak abdominal muscles. (fig. 3)
