Did you know?
There are approximately 45 million school aged programs in the U.S. Physical therapists commonly treat student athletes that participate in a variety of activities including baseball, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, skiing, and many more. Injuries can stem from overuse, stress fractures, and contact injuries. The most common include the upper body, arms, back and hips, knees and feet.
Recovery
Recovery for most injuries can take a few weeks, although some can be more involved, requiring longer. Depending on the severity of the injury, it can take weeks to heal, and concussions can take potentially months. Return probabilities will vary based on age, health, severity of an injury, medical intervention, and rehabilitation efforts. Many injuries feel better before they are completely healed, leaving the body vulnerable to re-injury.
What can you do?
Proper preparation can help athletes avoid injuries and stay at the top of their game, including schedules, goals, and gradual workout programs leading up to the start of the season. Take steps to prevent injuries and listen to body signals proactively. Minor injuries can become major if pain is ignored when it first occurs. Know when it’s time to stop. Consult with physicians, coaches, and trainers to provide optimum treatment.
Professional Support
Orthopedic sports specialists can offer:
• Proactive injury prevention
• Restorative care to diagnose and provide treatments
• Provide time frames related for safe return to play
Physical therapists can identify deficiencies that may be impairing performance or increasing the chance of injury with an evaluation. They will identify possible factors contributing to injuries, offering a comprehensive treatment program will help reduce pain, restore movement and strength, and correct functional deficits.
